GTN-G is operationally run by the World Glacier Monitoring Service (WGMS), the U.S. National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSIDC), and the Global Land Ice Measurements from Space (GLIMS) initiative. Amongst these three bodies, key expertise for in-situ measurements has traditionally been located at WGMS, whereas GLIMS and NSIDC have mainly focused on remote sensing and data management of glaciers, respectively.

The work of the GTN-G operational bodies is based on an extensive network of contributors who have been providing important data for many decades. The WGMS is operated through a small central service hosted at the Department of Geography, University of Zurich, Switzerland, and based on a network of ‘National Correspondents’ and ‘Principal Investigators’ in most countries that are active in glacier monitoring. The WGMS as well as the NSIDC are both services of the World Data System formed by the International Council for Science (WDS/ICSU). The GLIMS initiative is led by a Coordination Center with associated Regional Centers that coordinate the remote-sensing based studies of their region.
